THE SOUTHERN MARYLAND
Carousel Group, Inc.

Welcome

Welcome to the Southern Maryland Carousel Group.

The Southern Maryland Carousel Group, a 501c (3) organization, was founded in 2004.  Our goal is to construct a full scale working carousel in Southern Maryland.  The facility will house a carousel, woodcarving museum with artifacts and pictures of Marshall Hall, a gift shop and a woodcarving learning center for youth and adults.

Our shop is located at The Davis Building, 313 East Charles Street in La Plata, MD, where seven carvers work three days each week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.  There are about 20 artists we call on to paint the animals.   Carving of the animals started in early 2005 and to date we have 45 animals completed.  The animals are carved entirely of wood and by hand.  We need 48 animals and two chariots for the full three row carousel.  The adoption program has resulted in 15 animals and two handicapped accessible chariots being adopted. Four elementary schools have taken advantage of having their mascot on the carousel.

Currently we have animals placed throughout the County; Newburg Welcome Center, three County First Banks, The Carousel Clothing Store in Waldorf, Joson Jewelry in La Plata, House Boutique in La Plata, Charles County Courthouse, Charles County Government Building and the Baldus Center in La Plata.

Be sure and visit our website frequently as we are constantly adding more information and photos of the horses that have been completed and the progress we make to achieve our goal!

Carousel group needs online help
Reader's Digest contest giving away $200,000

by Paul S. Warner, Staff Writer, Maryland Independent

The Southern Maryland Carousel Group and La Plata town leaders are hoping that an online voting contest will win funds for a carousel.

The contest, called the We Hear You America campaign, is sponsored by Reader's Digest and allows voters to give their support for a specific town to receive funds for projects courtesy of the national magazine company.

The town receiving the most votes will win $50,000, but additional prizes are available, including two $25,000 prizes, five $10,000 prizes and 10 $5,000 prizes, said Ashley Gabriel, a spokeswoman with G.S. Schwartz & Co., which is managing public relations for the campaign.

Voting will last until March 1.

How to vote
To vote for La Plata in the contest, go to www.wehearyouamerica.readersdigest.com and register on the website.  Search for "La Plata, MD" on the website.  People may vote as many times as they wish.
